Cake
Live
CAKE is the Sacramento, California–based band that has built a singular body of work through an unwavering commitment to originality, independence, and creative self-determination. Formed in the early 1990s as a somewhat antagonistic response to the prevailing grunge movement, CAKE developed its own democratic process and fiercely self-reliant approach—principles that have grown stronger over the decades. The result is a band that operates as its own musical nation-state, with few evident peers in sound and perspective.
CAKE writes, arranges, produces, records, and performs its music from its Sacramento-based, solar-powered studio, which regularly generates more electricity than the building consumes—enough to send the meter running backward. That same spirit of independence extends to every aspect of the band’s work, from its music and recordings to the way it approaches touring and its relationship with its audience.
The band’s most recent album, Showroom of Compassion, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and was described by The New Yorker as “deadpan brilliance.” Across its catalog, CAKE seamlessly incorporates elements of rock, funk, country, jazz, soul, and Latin music without settling into any one genre. The result is a sound and vision unmistakably its own.
CAKE is currently at work on its ninth studio album, scheduled for release in 2027.
